The Neurobiology of Baffling Behaviors: Tools for Parents, Educators, and Clinicians

Sponsoring Organization: Western New Mexico University

Date: November 7th & 8th, 2025

Time: 8:30am – 4:30pm

Location: Western New Mexico University

DescriptionAll behavior makes sense- except when it doesn’t! The big, baffling behaviors of young children can leave even seasoned professionals and devoted parents feeling overwhelmed, ineffective, or ready to give up. When challenging behaviors don’t respond to typical strategies, it’s easy for caregivers to feel hopeless and for helpers to feel burned out.

In this two-day conference, we’ll look beyond behavior to uncover what’s really happening in the brain, body, and nervous system. The fast-emerging field of relational neuroscience gives us a new paradigm- one that makes sense of dysregulation, trauma, and related sensory challenges. When we shift the lens from “fixing behavior” to understanding needs, strategies become more effective, professionals feel more equipped, and parents regain hope.

This immersive training blends theory and practice in ways that are accessible and immediately applicable for parents, educators, and clinicians working with young children. Together we will:

  • Develop a shared understanding of what behavior really is
  • Make sense of baffling behaviors by learning how stress and trauma impact children’s nervous systems and show up as behavior
  • Partner with parents and families in ways that empower them while avoiding shame or blame.
  • Work effectively with resistance in parents by understanding it as a protective strategy, not a problem to overcome.
  • Practice concrete skills that support regulation, connection, and resilience in children and adults.

Attendees will leave with a clear, compassionate framework for making sense of behavior, along with tools they can bring immediately into classrooms, therapy rooms, and homes.
